Firefox aims for 3.1 release this month 9:42AM, Wednesday 6th August 2008
The beta version of Firefox 3.1 is due for release later this month, according to the projects developer calendar.

The development group expects to freeze new features on 19 August and release a beta version of the code to the public, although the site warns that the date is only an estimate.

Work on the new version of the browser has been underway for some time, with daily alpha versions being released since July.

Details of the new browser are also starting to emerge, with news that it will contain native support for the open-source Ogg Vorbis audio format and Off Theora video codec.

News came last month that a meeting was being held by Mozilla staff to discuss the schedule for development of version 3.1 of Firefox. At the time it was suggested that a beta version could be ready by August, and that a full release could happen by early 2009.

However, Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, said that he hopes to ship the software even sooner, perhaps by the end of 2008.
