Putting the .de back in Deutschland 5:35PM, Monday 4th March 2002
The latest battle over an Internet domain name has been settled, with a victory for the German government.

Reuters reports that the German consulting company Medianet has decided to give up the choice German address www.deutschland.de. A settlement was reached in order to avoid a long and costly legal battle.

In future, www.deutschland.de will host the main government portal for information about Germany.

Try accessing the site now and you will simply get an artistic holding page for the forthcoming site.

Technically, I suppose, the UK equivalent would be www.unitedkingdom.gov.uk, given the second level domains for the UK TLD. However, you should find our own e-envoy at the rather more prosaic www.ukonline.gov.uk.
