Old iPhones have second life as an "iPod touch" 11:18AM, Thursday 3rd July 2008

iPhone owners who can't find anyone to take their old model off their hands when they upgrade to 3G can always use it as an expensive and somewhat bulky iPod touch.

Apple has no plans to prevent deactivated first generation iPhones from being used both as iPods and to access the internet over Wi-Fi, according to US carrier AT&T.

"If the device is not re-activated as a wireless phone after you've upgraded to iPhone 3G, it will still work as an iTunes player and can access Wi-Fi," a spokesperson <

UK iPhone owners can upgrade to the new 3G model for free if they are on the Ł45 or Ł75 tariff; otherwise it costs Ł99. Old handsets can then be given to any friend or family member already on an eligible O2 tariff - they'll be able to transfer to one of O2's iPhone plans. If they're not already with O2 or on an eligible O2 tariff, they can get one of the new Pay & Go SIM cards.

Meanwhile Nokia has unveiled its latest smartphone and rival to the iPhone. iGizmo has a video preview of the N96, with 16GB of storage, a five megapixel camera and DVB-H support for Mobile TV.
