ISP shut-down abandons users

Posted on 30 Oct 2001 at 16:59

NTL is being accused of failing to inform users of Internet services provided by Cable and Wireless that they have just one month to find another ISP before NTL shuts down cwc.com for good.

NTL acquired Cable and Wireless for $8.2bn in the middle of 2000 and continued to provide cwc.com services to existing users until announcing that they would be terminating on 30 November. The company is encouraging customers to switch to its ntlworld.com services, but users who live in areas not covered by NTL are being left to fend for themselves.

NTL claims to have begun contacting customers in August, but according to a report on silicon.com some users are complaining that they didn't hear until the past couple of weeks and users who cannot get NTL services are 'angry' that the company has failed to provide an alternative. Moreover NTL will not be providing a means of forwarding cwc.com email to new addresses.

Business users with cwc.com accounts have complained that they have had little time to arrange new stationery and in one stroke will lose all their search engine presence.

Users who signed up for cwc.com prior to the NTL merger were promised 'Internet access for life' for a one-off £10 registration fee. Will NTL now be giving them their money back?

NTL was asked to respond to these allegations, but has yet to do so.
