Washing your Windows whiter than white
Posted on 3 Jul 2001 at 15:33
Wherever you browse and whatever documents you open, you leave behind an electronic trail. Covering such tracks is the intent behind Webroot.com's newly updated system, Window Washer.
Window Washer 4.0 automatically cleans up behind you - clearing out browser caches and cookies, together with the history of your browsing. As well as the surfing side of things, Window Washer tidies up system files on your PC, too. For example, it hoses down Windows' recently opened document list and empties out the recycle bin.
New to version 4.0 is the 'bleach' feature, which completely overwrites files so there is no chance of anyone recovering data from files that have merely been 'washed'. There's also a 'custom wash item' to define particular files or directories for treatment and Windows Media Players are now also cleaned.
Such cleaning can be scheduled to occur at specific times or whenever the system starts up or shuts down.
Window Washer is sold as shareware - priced at $29.95 on the Net - and the download weighs in at 1.4MB.
