Compaq hitches wagon to Itanium 5:21PM, Monday 25th June 2001
Intel is getting a huge vote of confidence from Compaq in the form of a cross-licensing deal that will see Intel's Itanium processors eventually used in all Compaq's servers.

In return, Intel has agreed to buy Compaq's Alpha server chip technology. All staff currently working on Alpha at Compaq will be employed by Intel although an upcoming Alpha chip, the EV7, will still be released by Compaq and an upgraded AlphaServer GS series will be available in the summer.

Compaq has also agreed to port its Tru64 Unix, OpenVMS and NonStop Kernel server operating systems to Itanium and to work with Intel on future high-performance products.

The move is thought to be an attempt by Compaq to pull out of the manufacturing side of the computer business and concentrate on becoming a solutions provider after disappointing PC sales.
