Google launched Sites back in February, but the service was initially only open to businesses with Google Apps accounts and their own domain names. However, the company has now lifted these restrictions meaning anybody with an inkling to create a website can do so without needing any great technical knowledge.
Google Sites essentially marries a WYSIWYG website creator with an online collaboration app, allowing users to quickly throw together a page by adding features from a Google wizard. They can then embed documents, videos, images and gadgets and invite others to view or edit the pages by handing out user privileges.
While the service will undoubtedly strike some as rather simplistic, Google is no doubt hoping to capture the magic of popular website creation service GeoCities which was responsible for a mass proliferation of websites back in the late nineties.
