Happy Birthday World Wide Web 3:32PM, Thursday 17th May 2001
The World Wide Web is 10 years old. The first general release of the Web happened on this very day, if you believe the World Wide Web Consortium, and they should know.

for 17 May 1991: "Presentation to "C5" Committee. General release of WWW on central CERN machines."

You can read the content of the presentation here. CERN, of course, is the European nuclear research organisation that wanted its staff to be better able to share information online.

So, you could say that the Web was started ten years ago today. A truly revolutionary phenomenon, it was the Web that enabled the Internet to truly penetrate into public consciousness.

We reported on Tuesday, that Tim Berners Lee - the man behind the World Wide Web - has been made an honorary Fellow of the Royal Society. But remember, Bill Clinton is the man who takes the credit for the Web - it happened on his watch, don't you know.
