Office 2007 Service Pack hits Automatic Update

Microsoft is set to roll out its first Service Pack for Office 2007 through Automatic Update next month.

The Service Pack was unveiled as a manual download in December, along with Service Packs for Sharepoint and Exchange 2007. At the time the company said it would give 30 days notice before pushing it out to automatic updates, giving users the opportunity to install the Microsoft update service, or switch it on if they weren't already using it.

Microsoft is planning a staggered distribution through automatic updates, meaning not all users will receive the update on the day of release - "a necessary precaution to ensure that our service infrastructure can meet the enormous demand for the service pack," according to the software giant.

The Service Pack essentially cobbles together all the bug fixes for Office 2007 since launch, with a number of performance tweaks for Outlook when handling PST files. In many cases, such as the fix for the Excel calculation bug, users will already have installed the majority of the fixes individually.
