Microsoft blows own trumpet over instant messaging survey 12:07PM, Monday 19th March 2001
Microsoft's MSN Messenger edges out AOL's instant Messenger, in terms of users, according to a new survey.

The survey, carried out by Jupiter Media Metrix, covered users in 12 countries last month. It showed that with 29.5 million customers, compared with AOL's 29.1 million, Microsoft's Instant Messenger just has the lead worldwide. In the stats for America, however, AOL has a clear lead: 25.5 million against 15.2 million for MSN.

Furthermore, the ICQ instant messenger service, which is also owned by AOL, has 20.6 million registered users. The Yahoo rival has 14.7 million, according to Jupiter.

For the UK, Microsoft claims a 240 per cent growth for MSN in the 12 months since February 2000.
