China closes gaps in the Web

Posted on 28 Feb 2001 at 16:47

If you have been following China's stance on the World Wide Web, you will know that the powers that be aren't too keen on its citizens downloading any unsuitable material.

According to report from Reuters, the Ministry for Public Security has upped the ante with the release of its new Internet Police 110 software. This new software package has been designed to keep all that unhealthy information from seeping into the Chinese consciousness via the Internet. The software comes in three versions - for home use, Internet cafes and schools - and can monitor Web usage, and block or delete offensive messages.

China regularly blocks access to Western sites and was even considering putting forward its own brand of the Internet. The country has embraced the World Wide Web for commercial and educational uses but has increasingly brought out regulations that make "subversive" material illegal.
