BT's mobile division admitted it hadn't bargained for the number of people who would be trying to activate their pay-as-you-go phones and the computer systems couldn't cope. This is despite the fact that according to BT, staffing levels were doubled over the Christmas period.
Customers are still experiencing hold ups although BT says it has cleared its backlog.
The phones bought over Christmas will no doubt have bolstered the UK average, with mobile phone penetration standing at over 66 per cent according to NOP Research Group. Over 4.5 million handsets were sold over Christmas, says NOP.
Only the Scandinavians score higher than that, with Sweden on 70 per cent and Finland on 72 per cent before Christmas, according to Forrester Research. Even the slowest Western European country, France, has 40 per cent penetration for mobile phones according to Forrester.
