Mac OSX launch date revealed
Posted on 7 Dec 2000 at 14:40
OSX will be launched on 24 February, according to reports today. Apple boss Steve Jobs will make the announcement at the MacWorld Expo in Tokyo, more than five weeks later than the rumoured-to-be San Francisco launch.
Industry insiders suggest that Jobs will use the San Francisco expo to reveal the final shipping date. OSX has passed the "feature-complete" stage of development and Apple are now concentrating on bug removal and optimisation. Upon release, developers are expected to begin work on an upgrade, code-named Orient, which will follow within 12 months.
Apple's hope is that OSX will boost flagging sales and that the recent slump has mainly been due to customers waiting for OSX.
The release will be supported by a "massive" marketing campaign.
