Apple bricks developers' iPhones 12:10PM, Wednesday 9th April 2008
Many iPhone developers found their handsets useless this morning as Apple disabled the latest beta version of the handset SDK.

The iPhone SDK allows developers to develop official applications for the iPod touch and iPhone, but the 1.2/2.0 release - which is only 11 days old - was expired by Apple before it released a new version.

Handsets with the affected version of firmware installed simply display a pink screen when booted, along with the message "this device is expired. Please install a newer version of the OS."

many users, who could see no newer version available.

Some users resorted to using unauthorised software from the iPhone Dev Team to reactivate their handsets, while others simply reinstalled a previous version of the firmware.

The problem appears to have been a temporary glitch, as version 3 of the iPhone SDK is now available for download from Apple's website. Apple was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

"Later in the day I realised beta 3 of the firmware released. I installed that version and all is well now; except for the latest SDK breaking my build," says developer Jay Selle on the Apple discussion board.

Apple launched the iPhone SDK last month, requiring developers to register with the iPhone Developer Program.
