The data centre, located in Switzerland, is expected to generate 2,800 megawatts of wasted heat per year when running at full capacity, enough to supply 80 houses with heating and warm water for the same period, according to the company.
However, instead of wasting that heat the company intends to pipe it to the local public swimming pool, heating the water while cooling the data centre.
"Through reclaiming the heat, approximately 130 tonnes of carbon emissions can be saved. This corresponds to the carbon dioxide discharge of mid-size cars driving 500,000 miles," says Steve Sams, vice president of IBM Global Site and Facilities Services.
IBM says the swimming pool cooled data centre will be completed within the next few months.
