The first bug fix for Windows 2000 is close to completion and sources believe that the service pack will be available some time next week.
Traditionally service packs have obscured the bug fixes with extra features, helping users believe that the download will provide them with added value, rather than solutions to their problematic Windows installation. In this case Microsoft has come clean and is mainly just fixing bugs - and they are serious ones, too.
What has been fixed?
- 5 Memory Leaks
- 35 Access Violations
- 12 Stop Errors
- Numerous security issues
What else do you get?
- Outlook Express 5.5
- Internet Explorer 5.0.31
Yes, that's not a typing error - Internet Explorer 5.5 is not included, yet. Now this news is based on a test release version of the pack. The final code is not quite ready, and we'll bet anything that the latest browser is included, particularly as it is already available as a download in its own right.
Systems administrators will be relieved to hear that Microsoft has finally addressed the age-old hassle of installing Windows followed by various service pack releases - now the application of the update can be automated in the Windows installation procedure.
