Blu-ray players get internet boost
12:23PM, Thursday 20th March 2008
Sony has announced that its next batch of Blu-ray players will support BD Live, its online support service.
Officially titled Profile 2.0, BD Live allows users to download additional content from the internet.
Early signs indicate that most of the special features will be those traditionally found on special edition versions of movies, including alternative endings, deleted scenes and commentaries. Though there's also rumours of Sony bundling movie blogs, allowing users to communicate and discuss the movie being watched, and ringtones.
Sony has also announced that the first players supporting the technology will be the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550, available in autumn, while movies will start appearing on 1 April.
The next firware update for the PS3 will also introduce support for BD Live.
