EU invests in embedded technology

The EU has committed €2.5 billion to the development of embedded computers, the hidden systems that control everything from cars to credit cards.

The Artemis Joint Technology Initiative will pool funding from member states, businesses and universities to promote the development of embedded systems and reduce the time to market for products based on these technologies.

The European Commission claims that four billion embedded processors were sold last year in a global market worth €60 billion and growing at 14% each year. That, it says, presents EU businesses with huge opportunities.

"Invisible computers embedded in all devices of industrial application can have a tremendously positive impact on Europe's economy", says Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media.

"This is why €2.5 billion of European public and private research investment into embedded system over 10 years is very worthwhile, ensuring that European technology remains at the forefront worldwide."
