Google launches new mobile search

Posted on 30 Jan 2008 at 09:43

Google has launched a new mobile search service which combines results from image, web, local business directory, mobile and news searches in one page.

Google believes that users searching on a mobile phone are more likely to be looking up snippets of information, such as football scores or directions, rather than conducting in-depth research and the search company has tailored its mobile results to suit this requirement.

To that end, searching for "Sunflower" now provides links to photos of sunflowers as well as web pages, claims Google. While this worked well for Google's suggested search terms, we were unable to repeat these results on many other searches, suggesting that Google still has some work to do.

The mobile service also allows users to narrow business search results by entering an address or post code, and saves recently entered locations.

"We're excited to introduce Google's new mobile search service, which will make it easier and faster for people to find what they're looking for anytime, anywhere," says Google mobile search product manager Steve Cheng.

"With millions of mobile phones in use worldwide, our goal is to make the Google search experience even more useful and relevant for users on the go."

Google has been making great efforts in the mobile sector in the last year, releasing a version of its Docs service in October last year, and even creating its mobile operating system, Android.
