iGoogle gets custom themes

iGoogle users can now create their own themes to change the look and feel of the portal, and browse user-submitted designs in a new directory.

iGoogle is a personalised version of the search engine's homepage, on which people can place 'gadgets' that display news feeds and other information.

Google has released an API and XML template which allows designers to create custom themes. The API provides features to modify the site, and even allows for themes to change according to the time of day.

"With the iGoogle Themes API, developers can design and share a theme with the tens of millions of iGoogle users around the world, providing even more options for users to customise their iGoogle experience," says a statement from Google.

Four example themes have been released in order to "jumpstart development", and can be accessed from the API page on Google's site.
