AA battery smashes records

Panasonic's new Evolta battery has been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest lasting AA alkaline battery in the world.
The award followed testing by the International Electrotechnical Commission which backed up Panasonic's claim that the Evolta can last up to 20% longer than rival batteries such as Duracell, Energizer and Panasonic's own Oxyride.
The battery also claims the longest "best-before" date, as it will happily sit idle for of up to 10 years, double the shelf-life of Panasonic's existing alkaline batteries, though this has yet to be real-world tested
Evolta was designed to provide more internal space allowing storage of "extra active" materials developed especially for the cells.
Panasonic engineers also deployed a new sealing technology for the cylindrical container to make it more robust. They also improved the manufacturing process to pack active materials more evenly and densely.
The new batteries will first be available in Japan from April in AAA, C and D formats as well as the record breaking AA.
