O2 is planning to launch an IPTV service in the UK, according to reports from The Guardian.
Trials of the service will begin next year, claims the article, and if they are successful a full launch will be scheduled sometime before the end of 2008.
The Spanish-owned mobile provider has the necessary infrastructure to launch such a service, having bought Be Broadband as part of a £50 million deal in 2006.
Indeed, O2 already offers IPTV in the Czech Republic, where it has deals with Warner Bros, HBO and Paramount to distribute content via 55 channels. Since its launch last September the company has registered 70,000 IPTV viewers.
If O2 does decide to launch the service, it will face stiff competitions from existing providers including BT (click here for our preview of BT Vision) Sky and Virgin Media.
