Rumours rife on RIM's iPhone rival

After rumours surfaced in November that RIM was developing a touch screen iPhone rival, tentatively titled the Blackberry 9000, a few more technical details have emerged.

New reports from technology news site Boy Genius Report, suggest the device will come with a 480 x 320-pixel touch screen, 1GB of memory and an Intel X-Scale PXA270 processor running at 624MHz, which clocks in slightly faster than the 620MHz ARM 1173 processor found in the iPhone.

According to the site, it will also feature Wi-Fi, HSDPA and 3G support, GPS capability and a 3.2 megapixel digital camera. There's still no word on whether RIM will overhaul its operating system for the touch screen, or do away with the physical QWERTY keyboard which has become a staple of the Blackberry brand.

The device is rumoured to be making an appearance in the first half of 2008, which could see it going head-to-head with Apple's recently announced 3G iPhone.
