The PC manufacturer now claims to be selling around 20,000 of its low cost laptops per month, emboldening the company enough to announce its intention of becoming the world's fifth-largest laptop PC vendor by 2010.

Asustek, which launched the Eee PC last month, believes the new line of cheaper notebooks will vault it ahead of some competitors by boosting its markets share in North America, where it currently holds less than 1% of the market.

The company says it is seeking to follow in the footsteps of Taiwanese rival Acer in trying to develop a globally recognised brand.

The Eee PC, which ships for around £220 including VAT in the UK, has been a stunning success for the company, winning positive reviews across the industry for its low cost, low weight approach to the segment.
