Sony is withdrawing from joint research with IBM and Toshiba to develop manufacturing technology for producing 32nm microchips.
While Sony is withdrawing from joint research and development, it will continue to work with Toshiba and IBM on design work for the chips.
The announcement follows a general withdrawal from advanced semiconductor production by Sony, which is unconvinced by the heavy investment involved to bring products to market.
The Tokyo-based electronics company is also planning to sell Toshiba its production facilities for making the "Cell" microprocessors and "RSX" graphic chips, both of which feature in the PlayStation 3.
