O2 removes iPhone tariff restrictions

O2 has removed the restrictions on data and Wi-Fi use from its iPhone contracts ahead of Friday's launch, meaning that the iPhone will now be available with truly unlimited service in the UK.

Although the tariffs announced by the company in September included 'unlimited' mobile data and Wi-Fi service, there was a fair use policy set "miles beyond expected average use" which actually imposed an upper limit on usage.

"This policy was intended to prevent commercial exploitation or using the iPhone as a modem, both of which would put everyone else's experience at risk," says Sally Cowdry, marketing director of O2 UK.

"We now appreciate that having set limits as part of the fair use policy conflicted with our objective of encouraging internet usage on the iPhone."

O2 has also announced that it plans to employ 1,400 additional staff before the iPhone launch, in order to keep up with the huge expected demand.
