Vodafone has launched its mobile music service in the UK, on the same day Nokia announced its rival offering.

The mobile phone giant has signed an exclusive deal with music firm Omnifone that will make 1.2 million tracks available from labels such as Universal and Sony BMG for £1.99 a week through MusicStation.

Users who subscribe will be able to download and share unlimited tracks, which will be retained even when they switch handsets, as long as they keep their Vodafone contract.

Vodafone is also touting the ability to create playlists and share songs with other MusicStation subscribers.

Users of Vodafone 3G handsets can now download the service, and a rollout across other devices including BlackBerrys and other touchscreen smartphones will follow in the next few weeks.

"On a very wide range of handsets, UK consumers now have the freedom to download, share and play unlimited amounts of music, direct to their phone, whenever they want," says Omnifone chief executive Rob Lewis.
