D-Link switches to Green Ethernet

Posted on 27 Sep 2007 at 12:50

D-Link has introduced a range of Green Ethernet desktop switches that it claims will reduce power consumption by up to 44%.

Designed with home users and small businesses in mind, the new switches detect when connected PCs are turned off and then put the respective switch into standby mode.

In addition, while most desktop switches use the maximum power necessary to support cable lengths of up to 100m, D-Link has found the average home uses at most 10m of network cable. So the new hardware has the ability to analyse cable lengths and adjust power usage accordingly.

Osbert Ong, D-Link's European product manager said that the new switches tap the zeitgeist for improvements in energy efficiency. "D-Link's Green Ethernet solutions are important, for the environment and for our customers," Ong says. "D-Link recognises the significant market demand for energy efficient networking products and is leading the initiative in making Green Ethernet a reality for the home and SME user."

D-Link will introduce its first Green Ethernet products - sub-24 port desktop switches - in the the final quarter of 2007. These will be followed in 2008 by managed switches, primarily those in its xStac range.

D-Link has an exclusive arrangement with the relevant chipset manufacturers to ensure that it is first to market with the greener technology.
