Dell intros "most manageable desktop ever"

Dell has introduced a new desktop that it claims is the world's most manageable, energy efficient commercial desktop ever. The OptiPlex 755 deploys Intel's new vPro technology to provide both sophisticated system management tools and to meet the latest energy efficiency requirements.

Also announced today, the new vPro chipset provides remote management tools that enable system administrators to access systems that have crashed or are powered down. According to Dell, this can reduce the time spent on patch deployment by up to 94% and desk-side service visits by up to 56%.

Dell has added its own Client Manager (DCM) Standard software - a management console available at no charge for the life of the deployment - and support management tools from companies including Altiris, Microsoft and LanDesk that integrate hardware and software administration.

The OptiPlex has also been designed with hardware management in mind. Dell claims that the number of steps required to remove and replace components on OptiPlex systems can be up to half that of similar HP desktops.

"Our commitment to customers is to eliminate complexity throughout the life-cycle of their IT assets," says Darrel Ward, director, Dell Product Group. "We designed the OptiPlex 755 to be the most flexible and versatile business desktop available to date with innovations in systems management, eco-design and services."

The OptiPlex 755 is available in a choice of four box sizes from £569 (exc VAT) with either Windows Vista or XP.

The desktop meets Energy Star 4.0 standards and has a Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) "Gold" rating and its Energy Smart power settings can reduce energy costs by up to 78%, according to Dell.

Dell plans to extend its systems management features to laptops with the introduction of the Centrino Pro Latitude D630c in October.
