LimeWire goes legitimate 12:02PM, Wednesday 15th August 2007
LimeWire is going legit. Lime Wire, the parent company of the popular p2p file sharing software, has announced that it plans to open a digital music store.

Initially the store will be a standalone website which will be promoted with links in the LimeWire software. Eventually users will be able to browse and purchase music directly from within the LimeWire program.

The first companies that have agreed to supply music to Lime Wire are IRIS, a distributor for hundreds of independent labels, and Nettwerk Productions, a record company.

"We are delighted to collaborate with these forward-thinking music companies and sell their authorised content through LimeWire," says Jesse Rubenfeld, Lime Wire's chief financial officer.

Songs will be sold without DRM in the MP3 format and users will be able to buy songs and albums "a la carte" or as part of monthly subscription plans.

Lime Wire is currently engaged in a legal dispute with the major record companies - in the form of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) - who are demanding $150,000 for every song that has been shared using the LimeWire software. Lime Wire reacted to the lawsuit by countersuing the RIAA for "restraint of trade".
