W3C revises XHTML for mobile devices 2:38PM, Wednesday 18th July 2007
W3C have completed the specification for XHTML Basic 1.1, a stripped-down version of XHTML for Web clients that do not support the full set of XHTML features. These include mobile phones, though not the iPhone, PDAs, pagers, and set-top boxes.

This revision adds a number of previously unsupported features to the Basic 1.0 standard. These include support for XHTML Forms, the value attribute for the li element, the target attribute, the style element and the style attribute.

This Candidate Recommendation specification This specification is considered stable by the XHTML2 Working Group and pending any alterations arising from the review period that ends on 31 August 2007 will be approved as a web standard before the end of the year.

W3C explains that it is not the intention of XHTML Basic to limit the functionality of future languages. But since some features in HTML 4 were developed for a desktop computer type of client, they have proved to be inappropriate for many non-desktop devices.

It notes that compared to the rich functionality of HTML 4, XHTML Basic may look like one step back, but in fact, it is two steps forward for clients that do not need what is in HTML 4 and for content developers who get one XHTML subset instead of many.
