Google searches for Linux Desktop 2:46PM, Thursday 28th June 2007
Google has released its Desktop search application for Linux. Google Desktop for Linux (beta) includes the same features as the Windows and Mac versions, such as comprehensive local indexing and Gmail and web history search.

Its Quick Search Box provides access to both web and desktop searches. Hitting the command key twice calls it up and results are displayed as the query is typed.

Users can search the full text of almost all the files on their Linux box, including text, PDF, source code, HTML files, email from Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org documents, Man and Info pages, folders, images and music.

The software is also capable of finding previous versions of files or recover those that have been accidentally deleted, assuming that they haven't been over-written in the interim.

Desktop joins Picasa, Google Earth and Google Toolbar for Firefox among the company's Linux tools and rewards the company's decision to open an office in China, as it was developed by the Beijing engineering team.

Google Desktop for Linux (beta) runs on Debian 4.0, Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu 6.10, SUSE 10.1, and Red Flag 5.
