New memory card to slot straight into USB
Posted on 4 Jun 2007 at 11:50
Memory card readers could become a thing of the past with a new card specification that plugs straight into USB ports.
The MiCARD specification, which has been approved by the MultiMediaCard Association, will be used in digital cameras, phones and other consumer devices with the MMC interface.
The new card is designed to make data transfer easier by slotting directly into USB sockets, eliminating the need for memory card slots or dedicated card readers on your PC or printer. Adaptors will be made available that will allow existing MMC devices to accept MiCARDs, although MiCARD slots will eventually be built into gadgets.
The MiCARD will measure up at 12x21x1.95mm and offer data transfer speeds of up to 480Mbit/sec.
'MMCA developed the miCARD specification to provide manufacturers with a solution that is adaptable and convenient for consumers,' says Yves Leonard, chairman of the MMCA. 'Adding USB 2.0 capability to a memory card provides an interface that is compatible with existing products and widely recognized by general consumers.'
