In his treatise on Apple's environmental policy, which directly answers many of the criticisms levelled at the company by campaign groups such as Greenpeace, he explained a range of changes the company would be making to machines appearing later in 2007.
First and foremost is a switch from fluorescent lamps to LEDs in the LCD displays used on the iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro and any other products yet to be introduced. The iPod already uses LEDs for illumination. The reason for this is that it will allow Apple to eliminate arsenic and mercury from all of its display products by the end of 2008. However, Apple computers - as all computers - will continue to contain small quantities of arsenic, as it is used in the production of semiconductors.
Jobs was, unfortunately, silent on the precise dates on which we might see these new products, perhaps in an effort not to damage sales of its current lines. 'It is generally not Apple's policy to trumpet our plans for the future; we tend to talk about the things we have just accomplished,' he wrote.
