Mozilla extends Firefox 1.5 support

Posted on 25 Apr 2007 at 10:40

Mozilla has extended support for Firefox 1.5 until mid-May. It had previously said that it would issue no further updates after today.

Basil Hashem, senior director of product management, explained that Mozilla had decided to extend the support period for a couple of weeks 'in order to allow for an additional Firefox 1.5.0.x release that incorporates the ability to accurately offer the user a chance to perform a major update' to version 2.

Currently v1.5's update feature only supports the installation of patches such as security and bug fixes. The imminent released of 1.5.0.12 will extend this to support a version-upgrade.

Firefox's release roadmap states that after a new major release the previous version will be supported for up to six months. However, Mozilla does make allowances for 'enterprise-oriented distributors and support vendors', notably Linux distros, that wish to provide extended support for legacy versions.
