Intel plugs in 50-watt Quad-Core Xeons

Posted on 13 Mar 2007 at 18:01

With an eye on the increasing power requirements of server-packed data centres, Intel has announced an update to its Xeon server range, with two low-voltage chips.

The 50-watt Quad-Core Intel Xeon L5320 and L5310 run at 1.86 GHz and 1.60 GHz, respectively (with 8MB of cache and 1066 MHz front side bus). They are intended to be part of Intel's 'Bensley' server platform.

'Intel has really responded to the industry's call to deliver unprecedented breakthroughs for data centre energy efficiency,' said the general manager of Intel's Server Platform Group, Kirk Skaugen. 'IT managers can get outstanding quad-core Intel Xeon server performance today and at no premium to dual-core products. We are thrilled to drive further records in lower power consumption and we won't stop here.'

The L5320 is priced at $519 and the L5310 $455, based on 1,000 unit direct orders. You can find the full Intel pricing schedule here (PDF).

Availability - in servers from the likes of Dell, Fujitsu Siemens, HP and IBM - is expected in the 'next few months'.
