Palm OS becomes Garnet

Posted on 26 Jan 2007 at 08:26

Access has announced that henceforth the Palm OS for handheld devices will be known as Garnet OS.

The name-change is a consequence of Access's decision to relinquish the Palm brand shortly after it acquired PalmSource and its OS. Palm is now the exclusive property of the smartphone and PDA maker of that name.

Devices that run the Garnet OS will no longer carry the Palm-powered badge, which has been replaced by, you will not be surprised to hear, an Access Powered logo.

The 'Access' technology and software product portfolio covers a wide array of functions from comprehensive mobile platforms to integrated browser-based suite solutions that deliver state-of-the art full-Internet browsing and related services, to individual applications that support specific device and network functions,' said Tomihisa Kamada, Access' chief technology officer. 'The new Access Powered logo provides a way to easily identify those mobile phones and other devices that include software from the entire Access product portfolio.'

Access did not say whether Garnet will be the name of its Linux-based successor to the former Palm OS. It previewed that Access Linux Platform (ALP, as it is currently known) at the LinuxWorld expo in August last year, saying that it was on schedule to deliver it to licensees such as Palm by the end of the year. Access said in December that it had shipped pre-release software development kits.
