Second Life goes open-source

The success of an online world is helped by the finesse of the game, but is ultimately defined by its adoption by users. Second Life isn't the only online world out there, and the move to open source code can be a great means of pushing a project forward, essentially for free.
Even so, the move to make code open source does not necessarily result in a healthy community of developers busily writing code for it. The success of Mozilla and its Firefox browser took many years to come to fruition after AOL released browser code as open source.
