Fujitsu unveils 300GB laptop drive 1:12PM, Thursday 14th December 2006
Fujitsu has launched what it claims is the world's first 300GB 2.5in hard disk drive for laptops.

The new MHX2300BT drive is based on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, which is essential in achieving increased capacity per platter. It brings notebooks a step closer to matching the storage capacity of desktop machines - desktop drives are currently available in capacities of up to 750GB.

Fujitsu says that among the additional benefits of the new hard drive are low power consumption - just 1.6W - high shock tolerance and near-silent operation.

Two models have been launched, one with storage capacity of 250GB and the other 300GB. Both drives have a 4,200RPM rotational speed and a SATA interface.

The drives also boast an average track-to-track seek time of 1.5ms; a maximum host transfer rate of 150MB/s; and a high operating shock tolerance of 300G (2ms).

The drives will be available in the first quarter of next year.

Toshiba unveiled a 200GB 2.5in hard drive in June.
