Logitech may not be the first name to spring to mind when you think of iPod accessories, but it has a pedigree of producing good-quality, well-designed desktop speakers, as evidenced by this set, the mm50. As well as the iPod dock, which sits in the middle of the unit, the mm50 has a line-in port on the rear so you can connect any audio source. It also has a connection for an iPod docking cable so you can dock your iPod with your Mac while it sits in the mm50. If the unit is connected to the mains, it will charge a docked iPod. Our favourite feature is the inclusion of a rechargeable battery, which charges while the mm50
There's a remote control that has controls for play/pause, step forward, step backward, volume, and standby. The latter two are replicated on the unit itself. There's another button - on both the device and the remote - for creating a 3D spacialisation effect, although we found the difference in sound to be minimal when using this. Overall, however, audio quality is excellent. There's plenty of detail and enough bass for all but the most ardent thud junkies. Although the mid range is lacking a little, this is a minor criticism and doesn't detract from the general standard of performance. We were very impressed by the Logitech mm50. The unit looks good, can be used just about anywhere you can think of and the sound quality is among the best we've heard for this type of unit. Cap that with the fact that you can buy one for just £80, and the Logitech mm50 is a real winner. By Kenny Hemphill
