Canon Selphy CP600  [MacUser]
COMPANY: Canon PRICE: £199  (£169 ex VAT)
RATING: ISSUE: 21 13  DATE: Jun 05

Verdict: The Selphy CP600's stylish silver design is compromised by its flimsy paper tray and ugly battery attachments

The Selphy CP600 is a stylish rectangular dye-sub printer with a silver finish. It's designed to print 6 x 4in snaps from your Mac or directly from a digital camera, and it can be used on the move.

The Selphy CP600's modern look is compromised somewhat by the rather cheap and flimsy paper tray that holds the 6 x 4in paper; we would have preferred the tray to have the same sturdy feel as the rest of the device.

It's possible to attach a battery and take the Selphy CP600 on the road. This does make it rather bulky, though, and, once again, detracts from its stylish design. However, you can't run the printer from the battery when it's connected to a Mac: its purely for printing directly from a camera. Essentially, it looks

like the battery has been thrown in as an afterthought.

The cartridge that contains the printing film can produce 36 prints and is sold in combination with the same number of sheets of paper. At a cost per print of 35p with the 108-sheet multi-pack, the Selphy CP600 is quite a bit more expensive to run than some of its competitors from other manufacturers. HP's Photosmart 375, for instance, runs at a cost per page of 24p from its 100-sheet equivalent.

It's pretty speedy, though, taking just a minute per print. The time increases slightly when printing multiples with ten shots, taking ten minutes 40 seconds.

Print quality is very pleasing, with strong vibrant colours and a good level of detail. The Selphy CP600 struggled a bit with lighter areas, with sections of white being rendered with a slight pink cast, although this is a minor problem.

The Selphy CP600 is a decent printer and you won't be disappointed by its prints. However, it lacks features such as Bluetooth and card slots, both of which we would expect in a printer at this price. We also would have preferred Canon to put more thought in to the paper tray and battery arrangement. It's a decent printer that produces good results speedily, but its lack of features and our reservations about its build quality mean we can't recommend it.
