Epson claims digital paper breakthrough 6:19PM, Friday 16th June 2006
Epson is claiming a breakthrough in the pursuit of digital paper: a foldable flexible screen that could be used to replace paper.

It claims the quad XGA (1536 x 2048) resolution marks out its A6-size sample as the highest resolution prototype in existence.

The development was announced on 9 June at the Society for Information Display (SID) international symposium held in San Francisco.

Low temperature polysilicon thin film transistors (LTPS-TFT) were overlaid on a plastic substrate using Epson's Surface Free Technology by Laser Ablation /Annealing (SUFTLA) technology.

The drive circuitry is simple so that it doesn't need many external interfaces, meaning the 'paper' can be borderless. Power draw is no greater than 6 Watts claims the company, and a memory function ensures the 'paper' is able to display information without any power into it at all.
