The iMac G5 is, says Apple, the world's thinnest desktop compute, with a 17in or 20in LCD display, slot loading drive and G5 processor squeezed into a 2in thick casing.

'Just like the iPod redefined portable digital music players, the new iMac G5 redefines what users expect from a consumer desktop,' said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. 'With the entire system, including a gorgeous 17- or 20in display, just two inches thin, a lot of people will be wondering "where did the computer go?".'

The 17in models come with either a 1.8GHz G5 processor and a SuperDrive or a 1.6GHz G5 processor and a Combo drive. The 20in model has a 1.8 GHz G5 processor and a SuperDrive.

The iMac has a completely redesigned system architecture, with a maximum 600MHz front-side bus, 400MHz DDR memory expandable to 2GB, AGP 8X graphics and 7200rpm Serial ATA drives up to 250GB.

The iMacs include all Apple's core applications - iCal, Address Book, Mail, Safari - as well as the iLife suite for managing digital images and ordering prints and books, authoring and burning DVDs, editing movies and making music.
