The case of the stolen iMac 11:26AM, Friday 25th January 2002
When his sister had her iMac stolen in a burglary, R D Bridges came up with a cunning ruse to get the machine back.

Fortunately the iMac was running Timbuktu, software which allows you to access the computer from another machine over the Internet. Bridges put an appeal on MacScripter.net for someone to help him with an AppleScript that would delete all the files on the Mac - some of which contained financial information.

With the co-operation of Timbuktu's developers,

he succesfully got the script onto the stolen machine. The stolen machine's user soon removed the script - though it may have already done its deleting - they also changed ISP to AOL, which made the process of tracking the machine a little easier.

Bridges was able to get into the iMac and insert a modified AOL connection file, which dialled his number and his sister's number when trying to connect to the Internet.

The sister contacted both AOL and the police and soon after the police called to say that they had recovered the Mac and her printer. The investigator simply went to the house from where the calls to Bridges and his sister were being made, and a woman admitted that she had got the iMac and printer from 'some guy'. She got one year's probation.
