Pirate Bay hit with $2.5 million demand 10:53AM, Tuesday 1st April 2008
The Swedish torrent tracking site, Pirate Bay, has been hit with a demand for $2.5 million in damages by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Despite the enormous sum, the claim focuses on only a small section of the torrents available on the site.

24 albums were tracked, and the number of times they were downloaded was used to arrive at a figure for damages, which some claim is unrealistic.

"They've counted the number of downloads, consider all of them to be lost sales, all of them as lost sales in Sweden and also that the number of downloads should be a correct figure," says Peter Kopimi, who works with Pirate Bay on copyright issues, in a <

The founders of Pirate Bay have yet to receive a date for a trial, having been indicted for copyright infringement in January.

An attempt by Danish authorities to block access to the site backfired by driving more traffic to the site and prompting the founders to thank the IFPI for the increased media attention.

"We decided to move to the desert of Sinai in Egypt since we feel that we'll be safe there," explains a rather cryptic post today on the Pirate Bay's blog, which, it has to be noted, is dated 1 April.

"Moses walked in the desert of Sinai for 40 years. Our servers will be active for at least another 40 as well."
