Apple settles millions of colours lawsuit
1:51PM, Wednesday 26th March 2008
Apple has reached an undisclosed settlement with two MacBook owners who said it had made false claims about the quality of the laptop's display.
Fred Greaves and Dave Gately brought a lawsuit last May, charging Apple with deceptive advertising, misrepresentation and unfair competition over the use of the phrase "millions of colors" to describe the capability of the LCD display.
They claimed that rather than showing 16,777,216 colours with an 8-bit LCD, the MacBook's 6-bit display used dithering deliver the "illusion" of millions of colours.
Greaves and Gately attempted to gain class action status for the lawsuit, but failed to find enough other MacBook owners who bought them on because of the millions of colours claim.
The case was settled without comment from either party.
