O2 sells "tens of thousands" of iPhones
9:33AM, Tuesday 13th November 2007
O2 has dismissed suggestions that the iPhone is not selling well in the UK.
of queues at Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores around the country were quickly seized upon by the phone's and Apple's detractors to suggest the launch had not been a success. Why queues are the measure of success is not made clear. The fact that iPhones are not activated in store and the sheer number of outlets selling the phone, around 1,300, would suggest that queues may be the exception rather than the norm.
Chief executive Peter Erskine said that "tens of thousands" had been sold since the Friday evening launch.
"It has been the fastest-selling device we have ever seen," he said, with two thirds of customers switching from another network in order to get their hands on year's most-wanted gadget.

Neither Apple, nor its partners O2 and Carphone Warehouse, have publicly stated how many iPhones they expect to sell in the UK, but Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has said more than once that the company is on course to meet its worldwide sales target of 10 million by the end of 2008.
