No reason for its withdrawal has been given. TheStreet.com reports that Apple spokeswoman Teresa Weaver declined to explain why the company decided to stop selling the computer to individual students and teachers or to acknowledge that the company had changed its policy.
Sources indicate that the company never intended it to go on general sale, but for availability to be restricted to institutional customers.
Sales representatives for the company told AppleInsider that placing the iMac on the educational store was 'a mistake'.
However last week's press release made no distinction between institutions and individuals; 'The 17-inch iMac for education is available immediately for education customers,' it said.
