Firebird 0.6, which was released on 17 May, uses the XUL user interface description language pioneered in Netscape 7. This allows the interface to be quickly and easily revamped, but also be used on any platform. Although the product is designed for speed and simplicity, it includes advanced features like context-sensitive menus and extra options for handling private information such as cookies and cached pages.
Usefully for those using small screens, Firebird can automatically resize images that are larger than the open window, in order to make the entire image visible. Users can then view the image full-size simply by clicking on it.
Although Firebird is the first release on Mac OS X, a version of the product, previously called Phoenix, was available for Windows and Linux, with an unsupported and highly-unstable experimental development version briefly available for the Mac.
Firebird can be downloaded for free from the Mozilla project Web site: www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird/
