Quark announces DMS, CopyDesk upgrades 12:11PM, Thursday 31st August 2000
Quark used last week Seybold publishing conference to unveil version 1.5 of Quark Digital Media System (DMS), the advanced digital asset management system for large publishing houses it launched in January.

Quark DMS 1.5 which will be available later this year introduces a feature called Collection assets: this enables any user on a DMS network to view shared assets in a single project-specific grouping.

Quark has improved DMS' user interface making it easier to check in and set attributes for multiple files and folders in a single operation. Contextual menus have been added to speed up common tasks assets can now be dragged and dropped onto the desktop for rapid checkout.

Quark also announced the DMS Image Editing module, an Xtension which takes advantage of DMS' Web module: this enables any authorised user with an industry standard browser to access and perform simple image editing processes, like cropping, rotating and scaling

graphics remotely without the need to install any software locally.

'The Image Editing module is a useful tool for Web designers and photo editors who need to edit images quickly without moving them over the network,' said Scott Moore, QuarkDMS product manager. 'Moreover, it's a great tool for application service providers, because it's totally platform-independent. Their customers can work from anywhere with any browser-equipped computer.'

'The Image Editing module is an example of a Web-based application downloaded by a server, the sort of thing we hear Microsoft promising to do sometime in the future,' said another Quark spokesman.

Quark also released beta version of its CopyDesk Special Edition, the standalone version of the text processing software currently only available as part of the Quark Publishing System. This is for third party developers who want to develop extensions for it.

Quark intends to launch a finished version of CopyDesk in the US as early as the end of this year with an international English version due to ship by the second quarter of 2001. Quark XPress 5.0 is still in alpha testing at the moment, but a company spokesman said he expected it to ship worldwide 'in the first half of next year for Mac OS 9, with a Mac OS X native version to follow by the end of 2001.'
